Broken promises led to Chhewang, Motup quit BJP
Saffron party failed to grant UT status to Ladakh, sold dreams to people

Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 16: Two top Bharatiya Janata Party leaders tendering their resignations in Ladakh region has brought to fore the failure of the saffron party to address the concerns of the people of the hilly region.
The BJP Member of Parliament from Ladakh constituency Thupstan Chhewang announced his resignation from the Lok Sabha and the party on Thursday. He sent a brief letter to party president in Jammu and Kashmir in this regard. "I have to inform you that I am resigning from party membership on health grounds with immediate effect," Chhewang wrote in his letter. "I am also writing separately to the speaker Lok Sabha for resignation as MP from Ladakh parliamentary constituency," he wrote.
Earlier, Dorjey Motup, Chief Executive Councilor of Leh's LAHDC had resigned from the post citing health reasons.
According to sources both the leaders have resigned to express their resentment against the party's top leadership to grant the union territory status to the region and backtracking from the promises which it had made to the people of Ladakh prior to the elections. "Both the leaders had promised to the electorate that if BJP comes into power the first thing it would do is grant union territory status to Ladakh but it did not happen," the sources added.
They said that people in Ladakh are of the opinion that BJP is no different than Congress, which just kept on garnering votes by giving them Union Territory "loli pop." "BJP during its more than four year rule has been just talking about Kashmir and Kashmir. No attempt has been made to reach out to the people of Jammu and Ladakh," said a politician.
He said, "BJP has let down the people of Ladakh as well as the people of Jammu region. But there is a difference. Two top BJP leaders, who had everything at their disposal, have said goodbye to power and have sided with their people in Ladakh. In Jammu region the BJP MLAs have preferred to side with power and seem least bothered about the aspirations of the people."
An analyst said that Chhewang and Motup resigning from the BJP is a big setback for the party ahead of the forthcoming parliamentary elections. "Both the leaders citing health reasons is just an excuse the fact is that they know that they cannot face the people anymore as the promises which were made by them have not been fulfilled," the analyst added.
He said the resignation of the two leaders from Ladakh region should serve as an eye opener for the top BJP leadership and it should put its act together before it becomes too late. "Still a few months are left for the Parliamentary elections to be held. If BJP wants to regain its ground in Jammu and Ladakh it needs to act. The BJP leaders should stop believing that people of Jammu and Ladakh have no option other than to vote for the saffron party," the analyst added.
