Early Times Report
kishtwar, Nov 17: BJP suffered a humiliating defeat in its strong bastion--Dachhan block-- where party managed to win only one seat out of 9 Panchayat seats on Saturday.
As per the details available with Early Times, the National Conference who had though officially announced poll boycott, bagged eight seats in BJPs strong bastion of Dachhan while BJP also lost majority of seats in Hindu heartland of Padder where so far out of 9 seats declared, NC backed independent candidates managed to win four seats.
The NC backed candidate from Afani Panchayat lost to BJP by one vote while NC lost Machail seat by six votes. Among the majority of the Panchayat Wards, NC backed Independent candidates managed to win sizeable number of seats.
Among the winners in Dachhan block is Ghulam Muhammad Khanday, a former militant commander who remained in jail with India's most wanted fugitive Masood Azhar.
The P.hd scholar who contested election with BJP backing lost in Dachhan to another educated youth Mansoor Ahmed who is double PG.
Both Dachhan and Padder blocks are considered as BJP's strong bastion and it's defeat in these two blocks shows strong anti incumbency factor against the party.
The main issue in Padder block was degree college which was though announce by the government, but the classes and staff for the same was yet to be sanctioned as a result of which the classes work could not be started.
In Dachhan the main issue was Kishtwar-Dachhan road as well as non providing of jobs to the local youths in Pakal-Dool Power Project as people had provided the land for its construction, but the villagers neither get job nor get the adequate compensation.
The people were also angry over the abusive and threatening role of the administration who threatened the unemployed youths and the land owners when the local BJP MLA Kishtwar Sunil Sharma was in power and hold the portfolio of Power Minister.
Similarly the people of Marwah block also boycotted the elections over the issue of construction of Pakal-Dool Power Project. Among 12 Panchayats, only two Panchayats witnessed the contest in Marwah while in Warwan block, out of 9 Panchayats only two Panchayats witnessed the competition and all the four seats are expected to go in the kitty of NC backed candidates. Due to poll boycott call by the people on six Panchayats in Marwah & Warwan, candidates were declared unopposed.
The surprising result thrown by the people in Dachhan and Padder block have put the BJP on back foot and the party needs to retrospect with regard to its policies towards the people.
