Kupwara records highest voter turnout of 66.7%

KUPWARA, Nov 20: Bitting cold and threats from different quarters, Kupwara recorded highest voter turnout of 66.7% followed by Bandipora with 66.3 and a bit low in Baramulla with 11.2 % in the second phase of Panchayat Elections, the polls concluded peacefully in north Kashmir.
The overall voting percentage across the 14 districts of the state was recorded 62 percent.
"The winter chill allowed very few voters to polling on Tuesday morning which accordingly increased with the passage of time in the frontier district of Kupwara", sources told ET.
They said that huge enthusiasm was seen among the electorate who came out in large number right from the morning to cast their votes.
In north Kashmir Kupwara district people cast their votes for the second phase of panchayat polls in Machil, Kalaroos, Rajwar, in Bandipora polling took place in two blocks including Ganstan and Nowgam, while as in Baramulla people partcipated in two blocks i.cluding Sangrama and Wagoora.
It is learnt that in the 2nd phase of polling, 90 sarpanch and 1,069 panches have been elected unopposed while voting took place on the remaining 281 sarpanch and 1,286 panch seats, for which 4,014 candidates were in the fray.
Meanwhile a senior official said that no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in north Kashmir.
Amid tight security, people shown greater participation in the second phase of panchayat polls, the official said.
He said that large contingents of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed at the polling stations.
It is in place to mention here that the third phase of the Panchayat polls will be held on Nov 24.
Meanwhile returning officer Baramulla has given a notice for re-poll for the Sarpanch constituency of Panchayat Halqa Nambla-B of Block Uri in Baramulla district on Nov 22.
