Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Dec 5: The Srinagar Kendra of Doordarshan, public broadcaster of India broke all records on Tuesday as an important news item was dropped only on the 'diktats' of a casual news reader who is working as a full-fledged employee in the Department of Agriculture.
On Tuesday the meeting of 1st governing council/advisory committee for saffron/spice Park was held and the same was chaired by Ariz Ahmad, Managing Director (MD) National Horticulture Board (NHB). Office of the Director Agriculture Kashmir had sent an invitation to DDK Srinagar asking them to cover the meeting.
A team of DDK Srinagar reached the venue of the meeting and carried out the coverage of the meeting. It was expected that the coverage would be beamed in the news bulletins that are broadcast from the Srinagar station of DDK in Kashmiri and Urdu at 7:00 PM and 7:15 PM respectively.
Sources told Early Times that the news coverage was not shown in the news bulletins much to the embarrassment to Department of Agriculture. As such the dissemination of information with regards to the topic could not take place and as such the concerned stakeholders were left high and dry.
"It came to the fore that the news item was dropped by the casual news reader who is an employee in the Department of Agriculture. The casual news reader was recently transferred from the Directorate of Agriculture to his original place of posting at Handwara in North Kashmir's Kupwara district," said sources.
Sources said that the casual news reader whose designation is Agriculture Extension Assistant used to work as media coordinator for the Directorate of Agriculture, Kashmir. He used to project a non-issue into an issue when he was at helm of affairs vis-à-vis media coverage of the department in news bulletins of DDK Srinagar.
"The casual news reader has embarked upon a mission to defame his own department and the best way of the same is to ensure that important meetings of the department are not given due coverage in the news bulletins of DDK Srinagar. It is no less than pity that a casual news reader is calling shots at the news room of the Srinagar station of Doordarshan," said sources.
Sources said that Director Agriculture Kashmir, Syed Altaf Aijaz Andrabi today rang up the concerned officers of DDK Srinagar and Department of Information at Srinagar and conveyed his anger as well as displeasure over the non-coverage of the important meeting. He expressed surprise as how come a casual news reader could issue diktats about the beaming or otherwise of news item at DDK Srinagar.
Besides MD, NHB the high profile meeting was attended by representatives of Tea Board of India and Spices Board of India. The administrative secretary of the department was called from Jammu to take part in the meeting, but still then the same was not shown on DDK Srinagar. It was also attended by senior officials as well as other stakeholders.
It would be in place to mention here that the meeting was held in connection with the revival of saffron and opening up of Spice Park and it assumes significance since the Government of India is very keen about the same. The saffron/spice park is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next few months.
