Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Jan 12: Due to fresh snowfall, price of the most of the essential commodities have shoot up with the result common masses are disappointed with the callous approach of the checking squads, who are in deep slumber.
After the fresh snowfall in Kashmir prices of most of the essential commodities have gone up and with the result consumers have raised a question mark over the working of checking squads that have given free hand to the shopkeepers, local cart vendors in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir valley.
"Tomato was being sold at Rs 40 to Rs 45 per kg at Amira Kadal, while as onion was sold at Rs 35 per kg, like wise chicken was sold at Rs 130 kg in Batmaloo, and other vegetables including cabbage was being sold at Rs 30 per kg, said a consumer Mohammad Subhan.
Ghulam Rasool from Kupwara district informed ET about the same problem, he said that the essential commodities are being sold at exorbitant rates and market checking squads of the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department is not initiating any action.
There is a shortage of Kerosene, LPG cylinders in the district, and the eatables are being sold at high prices in market, while as authorities of the concerned department have given free hand to local vendors due to which they loot the common masses at their own free will, said a local.
On the one hand the fresh snowfall has brought relief to the local farmers and at the same times it has added miseries for the poor labourers who are confined to their homes, they said that the prices of vegetables and chicken have witnessed sharp increase mainly due to the fresh snowfall.
Local residents from most of the districts of the Kashmir valley including Baramulla district have said that the department of CAPD and Market checking squad should conduct regular checks of the markets so that the consumers could heave a sigh of relief during harsh winter season.
