Kashmir silent on infant girl found dead, dumped in carton

SRINAGAR, Jan 16: Even as the body of infant girl was found inside a cardboard box at the LD Hospital in Srinagar recently, nobody in the valley, where leaders otherwise take "moral high grounds" has condemned the incident.
The picture of the infant who was found naked in the box had gone viral on the social media. But despite a massive outcry over degrading moral fabric in Kashmir, nobody "powerful or mighty" in Kashmir politics has condemned the incident.
From the mainstream politicians like Mehbooba Mufti to separatist leaders like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, everyone including Sayed Ali Geelani have been maintaining a silence on the issue. The so called civil society groups are also silent on the issue.
The silence of the Kashmir leadership on such a gruesome act has only exposed further their doublespeak on the crimes related to the females.
It has been second gruesome incident in the last three months when the Kashmiri leadership has remained silent on such issues.
On November 20, in the dead of the dark a mentally retarded woman gave birth to a child in an abandoned house in Ganderbal without any medical help.
While the infant didn't survive she was subsequently hospitalized.
Some activists said the said woman was raped at Malkha, a graveyard in Srinagar by some youth some months ago, while the police were probing the incident.
But the way the leadership has been maintaining silence on the issues only exposes that the women of no age group are safe in Kashmir.
"When you kill your own baby child because she is a girl and women are raped inside graveyards, the moral character of such a society can only be imagined," said a social activist on the condition of anonymity.
The State Human Rights Commission, which otherwise claims to be champion of rights and often initiates action against security forces, has also been silent on such cases where Kashmiri society is involved.
Sources said some pro-Kashmir voices want "such crimes to be ignored as it can bring disrepute to the Kashmir movement."
On January 14, the baby girl was found dead inside the carton at the maternity hospital here while a case was also filed.
