Open violations of labour laws in Udhampur Industries | | | Ashwani Sharma Early Times Report
Udhampur, Jan 18: Besides polluting the environment, the cement factories in Udhanmpur violate labour laws by exposing the workers to dust. "While it is clearly mentioned in Labour Act of the State that working hours in any factory is eight hours and above that the workers are eligible for over time double the amount of what is normally paid per hour, none in the cement industries here follow such rules as workers complain that they are asked to work for 10-12 hours on normal wages," a source in the industrial area informed. When contacted certain workers engaged in the cement industries endorsed the statement and rued that it seems there is no law for them. Sources informed that concerned authorities have fixed monthly grafts from the industries so they never pay any visit to check violation of Labour Laws. More surprising is the fact that the J&K State Industrial Policy, which makes it mandatory for the industries to have maximum working staff from locals, is nowhere adhered to by these industries as maximum workers in these industries are out siders and avoid the local staffs Sources further informed that maximum technical staff in cement industries at Battel Ballian Udhampur comprises of non-locals. According to law, however cumulative share of locals employees in all the categories shall minimum of 55% of the total employment in every unit and there shall be increase of 5% every year in order to eventually reach 90% level in all categories but this order is observed more in breach. When contacted, heads of certain industries remained tightlipped over the issue. It is pertinent to mention here that during elections employment of locals in industries always remained political promise of every politician as a way to reduce local unemployment but so far nothing on ground has been done in this regard. |
