PDP's mischievous agenda, mischievous propaganda

Jammu, Feb 1: Concerned citizens of Jammu & Kashmir are closely watching the activities of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). They are a worried lot. They have come to believe, and perhaps rightly, that if the PDP chief and her colleagues are not reined in forthwith, the situation in Kashmir will go out of hand and the best opportunity to salvage the valley will be lost forever. Time is fast running out. To not act now would be to endanger national unity and integrity. This is the general view and talk of the town.
It all started on March 1, 2015, when the newly-appointed Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed credited Pakistan and its assets, like the Hurriyat Conference and militants, for the successful conduct of the 2014 Assembly election which saw large-scale public participation. PM Narendra Modi and a number of Union Ministers and top party leaders, including party chief Amit Shah and LK Advani, were present on the dais. It happened in the Zorawar Singh Auditorium, Jammu University. The PDP has not looked back since then, despite the interventions from the Union Government. It has not missed a single opportunity to promote its controversial religio-political agenda and promote Pakistani cause in J&K and provide full space to Pakistani agents like Syed Ali Shah Geelani so that the latter can mobilize Kashmiri opinion against India.
During the past 4-odd years, the PDP has committed several controversial acts that have disturbed the bulk of population in the State and the rest of the country. Steps taken by it while in the government and outside the government have convinced the concerned citizens that the PDP leadership is to wreck the polity and promote the Pakistani cause in J&K.
For example, on Thursday, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said India's response to telephonic conversation between Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has reduced the ties between the two countries to the lowest level", and added that "terming a phone call between Pakistani FM & Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as anti-India has reduced ties to an unbelievable nadir".
Not just this, she also questioned the very Indian foreign policy vis-à-vis Pakistan. "A foreign policy dictated by the compulsions of electoral politics is shockingly pathetic," she said, and urged PM Narendra Modi to follow the Vajpayee line so that there could be talks between India, Pakistan and Hurriyat.
What she said was nothing less than an open revolt. The truth is that the PDP has been saying day in and day out that the Government of India must "initiate a meaningful dialogue with separatist groups like Hurriyat and Pakistan" and has been consistently opposing the Union Government's move to rehabilitate internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus even in a "composite township" in the valley.
Earlier, the PDP had flatly refused to issue Dogra certificates to Jammu youth, desirous of seeking employment in the Central paramilitary forces, including the Central Reserve Police Force. It had also refused to issue Permanent Resident Certificates that would help children secure school admissions.
The PDP took these decisions following the senseless and communally-motivated opposition from the separatist camp. Hurriyat leaders like Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had said that the issuance of Dogra certificates and PRCs were a "conspiracy" hatched by the PDP-BJP coalition Government to "implement the RSS agenda in Kashmir" and "grant citizenship rights to Jammu-based refugees from West Pakistan through the backdoor".
It has also been saying that "they (India) use our water and our land" and the Government of India must return the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation-run power projects to the State Government. Additionally, the PDP has also been saying that the powers-that-be in the state and at the Centre must provide space to separatists so that they can propagate their ideology in the valley. But more than that, it has been saying that "Geelani is a big leader".
All these declarations and statements have only added fuel to fire as well as upset the well-wishers of the State and the country. They also indicate the direction in which the PDP wants to lead Jammu & Kashmir.
