SMAS: HC grants 'final opportunity' to govt for fresh survey of poor girls

Srinagar, Feb 8: The State High Court has granted government one more opportunity to file fresh report after taking latest survey about the poor and destitute girls in the state for providing them benefits under State Marriage Assistance Scheme (SMAS).
Member Secretary legal services authority was supposed to file report in terms of previous Court directions. However same was not filed and today a division bench of Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey and Justice Sanjeev Kumar granted one more opportunity to him file the same.
In case failure, the court ordered that Director SWD as also the Member Secretary Legal Services Authority be remain present before the court
Under SMAS, an eligible poor girl beneficiary will be entitled to a one-time financial assistance of Rs 25,000 and five grams of gold from district social welfare officers (DSWOs).
The court was hearing the PIL which was initially a petition, seeking quashing of PSA order at the pre-execution stage against one Mohammad Amin Beigh, a resident of Kulgam in south Kashmir.
Beigh-who was running a private security agency- was ordered to be detained under the PSA by District Magistrate Srinagar on December 26, 2011 for indulging in immoral activities including physically exploiting poor girls as well as 'supplying' them to others.
