Stranded passengers in Jammu facing difficulties; Politicians stay indifferent
2/10/2019 10:49:46 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 10: At a time when more than 5000 passengers are stranded in Jammu city from last more than a week due to closure of Jammu -Srinagar highway following recent heavy snowfall , politicians from various political parties especially those belonging to Kashmir valley have failed to even visit these stranded passengers. The passengers allege that even Govt officials have not visited them.
Details available with Early Times reveal that most of these people had come to Jammu for some work in secretariat or had come back from other parts of country like Delhi , Ajmeer etc , but due to closure of highway they are unable to go back. Majority of the passengers who hail from various districts of valley have no money left with them and now they are forced to take refuge either at bus stand or inside the Srinagar bound vehicles at JDA parking opposite Maharaja Hari Singh Park (Gujjar Nagar road).
The passengers allege that hotels that used to charge Rs 500 or 600 few weeks back per night are now charging double or even triple and there is no check.
"Authorities have even failed to issue a circular to the hoteliers and restaurant owners. We are now staying inside a vehicle from last 3 days along with family. Some volunteers provide us food and this is how we are struggling here in Jammu. I am shocked that many politicians from Kashmir who live in their bungalows in Jammu didn't even come and visit us. Leave aside giving us food and blankets, they have failed to even talk to us. When they need votes , they would beg before us" said Hilal Ahmad Dar a resident of Budgam.
Some stranded passengers as per reliable sources are selling their watches, cell phones and other valuable items to meet their expenses in Jammu. They allege that Government has failed even to shift women and children to some safe places around Jammu city.
