Kashmiris celebrate hartal in Gulmarg

srinagar, Feb 11: Even as the so called Joint Resistance Leadership had given call to hartal on February 9 and 11, scores of Kashmirs thronged the hill resort of Gulmarg the celebrate the "holidays".
Sources said the ski-resort had "full bookings" for the weekend mostly from locals who had decided to enjoy the days of hartal. It is pertinent to mention that on these two days, two Kashmiris convicted for terror activities were hanged in Tihar jail.
Sources said the hotels had been getting requests for booking in advance for the last many days. "Now it has almost become a routine that annually many of the families decide to spent the days of tension in Kashmir at Gulmarg," said a tour operator in Gulmarg.
A family from Srinagar who had gone to Gulmarg said that they were fed up of separatist politics.
"Hartal is only for the common people because hartal doesn't affect the livelihood of these so called Hurriyat leaders as it actually boosts their business of politics of hate," said an official on the condition of anonymity.
A hotelier in Gulmarg said they did a good business on this weekend due to the hartal that prompted people to come to the hill resort.
"For the last few years some of locals have become our regular customers who come to Gulmarg during these hartals," said the hotelier.
Officials said the public response to the hartals has been such that traffic jams are witnessed during the strike calls.
"Just last Saturday when there was hartal there was a massive traffic jam on road to the airport and this should serve eye-opener," said an official adding that special arrangements had to be put in place to streamline the traffic on the said day.
A shopkeeper that that "only loser in the hartals are the traders." "Only our shops are generally closed while rest everyone does his or her business," the shopkeeper said.
Meanwhile as usual the separatists have been "thanking people of Kashmir for observing hartal on these two days."
