Anantnag, Mar 17: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Vice President of the National Conference (NC) Omar Abdullah on Sunday set tough conditions for an alliance with the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir for the general elections.
Talking to media on the sidelines of a party convention held in Dak Banglow Anantnag, Omar said that his party was open to a pre-poll alliance with the Congress if the latter agreed to NC's seat sharing formula for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
"We have received a proposal from the Congress for alliance, but we made them clear that our candidates will contest on all three Lok Shaba seats in Kashmir. If they agree we can take forward this alliance plan and discuss other remaining seats," Omar Abdullah said.
J&K has six Lok Sabha seats, three in the Valley, and two in the Jammu division and one in the Ladakh division.
He said that his party was ready for contesting assembly elections in the state as well.
"When we met Election Commission members we demanded that general and assembly elections be held simultaneously in the state but unfortunately they didn't do that." he added.
Commenting on the launch of a new political party by former IAS officer Shah Faesal, Omar said it remains to be seen whether the new party would have something new to offer to the people. "Shah Faesal had came with a new political party and we will see what will be his agenda and what his stand will be on different issues including Accession," he said.
Omar Abdullah, a Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister had said that state's Accession with Union of India is temporary.
He said it was pointless to expect any forward movement towards the resolution of the Kashmir problem till the Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections were over. He also expressed his willingness to initiate dialogue with Hurriyat and militant leadership besides retreaited to repeal Public Safety Act.
Commenting on the ban and the subsequent crackdown on the cadres of the Jamaat-e-Islami in the state, Abdullah said that he never felt the need to ban the Jamaat when he was the Chief Minister of J&K.
