Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 31: Chander Mohan Sharma, founder convener of Jammu Tawi Andolan, expressed shock to see that climate change, environment protection, water bodies conservation, deforestation are nonissues in the agenda of the campaign for Lok Sabha elections in the state. "Our state has been blessed by the nature with beautiful lakes, mountains, valleys, meadows, rivers, springs of world-wide acclaim. At present, the rampage and uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources by different mafias has rendered it to the extent of being pronto the natural calamities. Recently, our state has witnessed devastating flood furry and risk of further danger of natural calamities is looming large. These mafias have support from persons enjoying political powers", Sharma said.
He added the judiciary particularly J&K High Court has given number of directions to the state govt. and its different departments for protection of forest, lakes, rivers and other water bodies but so far state instrument has failed to comply these directions. This is a matter of great concern for the public. It was expected that the campaigns for the election 2019 will focus on these issues. Natural calamities are not less dangerous than terrorism etc. Unfortunately, political parties have failed to include these vital issues in their vision for future of the state, he said the squeezed, illegally grabbed and polluted water bodies are crying for the attention of the administration. Recently published news items about aquatic life in Surinsar and Mansar lakes are under severe threat due to water pollution.
It is the matter of satisfaction that Dr. Jatinder Singh who is contesting from Udhampur Lok Sabha seat successfully got the plan and funds for rejuvenation of river Devek. But at the same time rejuvenation of river tawi though discussed much but remained out of focus practically, JTA Founder Convenor, further said. Jammu Tawi Andolan calls upon the candidates contesting for Lok Sabha elections to disclose their agenda regarding the issue of provision of pure drinking water and clean air for there voters. Others present in the press conference included co-convenor Subash Gupta, Balwinder Singh Bhatia, Raj Kumar Gupta, Subash Shastri, Ramesh Sharma, Prof. B.L Bhardwaj, Veena Bhakshi, Reena Slathia, Surinder Kaur and others.
