SKUAST-J Vice-Chancellor inaugurates QRT of AICRP on Weed Management

Jammu, Apr 20: Dr. K. S. Risam, Vice-Chancellor SKUAST Jammu inaugurated the QRT meeting of All India Coordinated Research Project(AICRP) on Weed Management (North Zone) jointly organized by the AICRP Weed Management, Division of Agronomy, SKUAST-J, Chatha & ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur at Rail Head Board Room of SKUAST-Jammu. This meeting is scheduled to be held from 20th to 22nd April, 2019 for reviewing the quinquennial work done in weed management scheme during last five years from 2012-17 and decide on future course of work to be taken up by the five north zone centres comprising of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir in the field of weed management in their respective domains.
Vice Chancellor, Dr Risam and Chairman QRT, Dr. A. K. Singh and members of the team set the agenda for the meeting while stressing upon the need for efficient weed management which is crucial for realising optimum yields of all the major food, fibre, oilseed, pulse, vegetable and forage crops of these regions devoid of which the crop losses may be experienced from 30-60 % leading to reduced productivity in crops and cropping systems not only in the Indo-Gangetic Punjab, Harayana but also in the relatively fragile hilly states like J&K, Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The scientists were advised to work earnestly to ensure minimum crop losses, reduce herbicide residues in soils and crops and come up with integrated and biological weed management solutions in natural pastures and organic agriculture besides working on the aspects of weed utilisation in various ecosystems.
The QRT team comprised of Dr. A. K. Singh, Former DDG- ICAR, New Delhi as chairman, Dr. R. P. Singh, Former Director & Dean, Institute of Agri. Sciences, BHU, Varanasi, Dr. R. Siddaramappa, Former Dean (PGS), UAS, Bengaluru, Karnataka, Dr. R. D. Gautam, Ex-Professor (Entomology), ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, Dr. Parshuram Samal, Ex- Principal Scientist, Agricultural Economics, Cuttack and Dr. R. P. Dubey, Principal Scientist, ICAR-DWR, Jabalpur as QRT member secretary. Dr. J. P. Sharma, Director Research, Dr. B. C. Sharma, Head Division of Agronomy, Dr. Anil Kumar, Professor, Division of Agronomy, Dr. B. R. Bazaya, PI, AICRP on Weed Management, Dr. Mahender Singh, PI, AICRP on Agro-meteorology, Dr. Neetu Sharma, Assoc. Professor, Division of Agronomy, Dr. Sushmita Dadhich, Asstt. Professors, Dr. R. Puniya, Jr. Scientist were also present on this occasion.
