Cracks surface in separatists again, Hurriyat divided on hartal calls
4/23/2019 11:21:16 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 23: Srinagar: Amid questioning by the National Investigation Agency, cracks have yet again surfaced in the separatist leadership with their leaders giving contradictory calls for shutdown in Kashmir.
While the Anantnag Parliamentary constituency went for polls today, the Hurriyat leaders had given different calls and different reasons for the shutdown.
While senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani had given hartal call only for Anantnag district, the so called Joint Resistance Leadership of which Geelani is also a member gave a separate call for hartal across Kashmir Valley.
Whereas Geelani had given the call to "boycott elections", the JRL has given the call for jailed separatist leader Yasin Malik.
The two handouts that were released by the separatists exposed the widening cracks in the pro-Pakistan leadership.
As per one of the statements, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Geelani, Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik called for a valley-wide protest shutdown on Tuesday April 23, 2019, against the "ill-treatment meted-out to incarcerated Yasin Malik by NIA at Delhi and also against the ongoing aggression of NIA and ED against Kashmiri resistance leaders, activists, senior businessmen, trade union leaders, kith and kin of resistance leaders and other people from different walks of like."
A spokesperson of JRL said that "NIA's highhandedness has in fact forced senior resistance leader Muhammad Yasin Malik to go on hunger strike and today his hunger strike has entered 12th day. The life of ailing Yasin Malik who is admitted at RML Hospital Delhi is in danger and rulers and their agencies are busy in playing with his life callously."
But the statement issue by Geelani had no mention of NIA. The Hurriyat (G) chairman had called for shutdown and election boycott in south Kashmir's Anantnag on April 23.
"New Delhi is portraying these elections as a substitute to our right to self-determination and always tries to hoodwink its own people and the international community," Geelani said in a statement.
Geelani avoided mention of the NIA in the statement on shutdown when his elder son Nayeem Geelani is being questioned by the NIA in the national capital in connection with the terror funding case.
"Hurriyat is over. NIA questioning has left them shocked and confused and that same is visible in their statements," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
