Family issue keeps 'PDP scion' away from polls
4/25/2019 12:11:10 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 24: A close family member of a top Peoples Democratic Party leader remained conspicuous for staying away from the polls in Anantnag on Tuesday.
Sources said the family member who was also a minister in the previous government didn't even visit the constituency from where the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti is contesting the Parliament elections.
Sources said a "family issue compelled" the said leader to stay away from the polls.
Sources said the family is divided over the kind of treatment meted with them by the party leadership.
"In the last two years, only some of the relatives were pampered by the PDP whereas the others have been sidelined and this discrimination has become a reason for discontent within the family," said a source in the family on the condition of anonymity.
The source said the controversy started when one of the leaders of a top PDP leader was stripped of his ministry during the PDP-BJP regime. "He was removed from the ministry for being relative from one side whereas those enjoying power from the other side were having a field day," said a PDP leader on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said since then some of the "relatives on the maternal side" have been trying to keep the relatives from the other side away from the politics."
Sources said the politician in question is taking side of the relatives who are feeling offended and thus didn't turn up even to cast vote.
"These elections are very important for the PDP and he should have come forward to cast his vote but his absence has sent a bad signal in the entire political circles in south Kashmir," said a source in the party.
Sources said some of the party leaders have taken a serious note of the absence of their senior leader on the day of polling and have decided to pick up the issue with the party leadership.
Despite repeated attempts the said leader couldn't be contacted for comments.
