Revolt in Ladakh Congress

Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 25: A few days ago, it appeared that the Congress would turn tables on the BJP by avenging its 2014 defeat it suffered at the hands of Thupstan Chhewang, a top Buddhist leader and son-in-law of Queen of Ladakh Rani Parvati. The Congress poll prospects appeared quite bright because the BJP had failed to fulfill its two 2014 solemn commitments - UT to Ladakh and inclusion of Bhoti language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The BJP did try to conciliate the estranged people of the Leh by granting separate University for Ladakh and also granting divisional status to the region, but with no result and things remained under control as far as the Congress was concerned.
However, things took a dramatic turn during the past 6 days, which have all the potential of spoiling the chances of the Congress in Ladakh. Two major developments took place in the region, one each at Kargil and Nubra Valley. In Kargil, senior Congress leader and former MLA and CEC of Autonomous Hill Council Kargil Asgar Ali Karbalaie revolted against the party and filed nomination papers from t

e lone Ladakh Lok Sabha seat. He is being supported by a powerful religious organization Imam Khomeni Memorial Trust, Kargil. The Congress leadership tried its level best to withdraw his nominations and support the official candidate and former CEC of Leh Autonomous Hill Council, Rigzin Spalbar, but failed to persuade him.
The other development, which hurt the Congress in the region, was the banner of revolt raised by one top Congress leader Thukjey Dolma of Nubra Valley. On Tuesday, Dolma quit the Congress and joined the BJP. Dolma is a prominent social worker, who enjoys massive support in the region. The Congress admitted that Dolma quitting the Congress just before elections constituted a big setback to the party.
Ladakh will vote on May 6 and the contest will be between 4 candidates -- Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of the BJP, Congress' Rigzin Spalbar, NC-PDP and Islamia School Kargil-supported Sajjad Hussain Kargili and Asgar Ali Karbalaie.
Total number of voters in Ladakh is 1,74,967. The district-wise figures are: Leh 86,837 and Kargil 88,837. Male voters are 89,856 and female voters are 85,108.
