Udhampur admin violates ban on plastic bottles
5/9/2019 12:03:04 AM
Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, May 8: The administration in Udhampur is not giving a damn about the fragile environment in the district, as it's brazenly violating the official ban on use of plastic water bottles in government offices.
On March 8, 2019, the government of Jammu and Kashmir issued an order (356-GAD of 2019) prohibiting use of plastic water bottles in government offices across the state.
The order mentioned that keeping in view the adverse impact on health and in order to avoid environmental hazards, "it is hereby ordered that all Government Offices/Boards/Corporations/Autonomous Bodies/Universities Universities in the state of Jammu and Kashmir shall dispense with the use of single use plastic water bottles in the respective offices and make alternate arrangements for safe drinking water that does not generate plastic waste; and only multi-use water bottles/dispensers/containers will be allowed in Government Offices, instead water bottles of alterative materials like Glass, Steel, Aluminum, etc may be used."
The government had directed "all the concerned Departments/Organizations to ensure compliance of the order in letter and spirit."
But here in Udhampur, its seems that the district administration is either unaware (which looks unlikely) about the ban on use of plastic bottles or does not care about the government directive. Which explains why senior officials like Deputy Commissioner, Additional Deputy Commissioner, and other officials of district administration still use plastic bottles in their respective offices.
Sources in the administration told Early Times that the use of plastic water bottles is a daily routine during the official meetings or in offices of the higher officials of the district.
"It appears that the district administration thinks they are above the law and that the official orders are not meant for them," the sources said, urging the Divisional Commissioner Jammu to take the erring officials to task and ensure that the official orders are implemented in the letter and spirit.
