Is BJP more powerful than ECI? Party deciding timing of Assembly polls
5/15/2019 10:11:22 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 15: Although Election Commission of India (ECI) has yet not announced its decision on timing of Assembly elections in J&K, BJP leaders are giving statements on timing of the polls in the State.
ECI is waiting for the reports of Home Ministry to take a final decision on the timing of assembly polls, BJP general secretary Ashok Koul said on Tuesday that elections will be held in state once nomads return from grazing cattle.
After completion of the Lok Sabha elections, ECI will take feedback from state government as well as from Union Home Ministry before taking final decision on holding assembly polls in J&K, which is under President's role.
As reported earlier by The Early Times, group within BJP is of the view that Assembly elections will be delayed so that party will recover its lost ground.
"Some parties demand holding of assembly elections immediately is not possible because Gujjar and Bakerwal, which are about 30 lakh voters are in migration phase these days. We can't deprive them of their voting rights. So once they return back from grazing their stock from hills, assembly polls can be held," Koul said, in a statement.
State based political parties including Congress and NC have demanded that assembly elections should be held in the state after Parliamentary polls were conducted recently.
Over the prevailing security situation in the Valley, Koul said that out of 10 districts of Kashmir "only 3 districts are witnessing volatile situation."
