Kashmir centric parties make providing legal aid to anti-nationals as poll agenda | | | Early Times Report srinagar, May 16: Ahead of assembly elections in the state, it seems that political parties are set to appease people associated with anti-national groups by offering them legal support. All Kashmir based parties have been openly supporting the separatist politics as was seen in the parliamentary polls. Now as assembly elections are to be held in the state, these parties are offering legal aid to these banned groups. Newly floated party J&K Peoples Movement (JKPM)-led by Shah Faesal is in the process of setting up of legal cell. "We are creating a special legal cell for providing legal aid to political prisoners, particularly detainees shifted outside the state. Families of incarcerated individuals and interested lawyers and volunteers can contact," Faesal has tweeted. He also urged the government to immediately review these cases and set them free. "I have been told that various leaders are facing inhuman jail conditions and no one is coming forward to help," Faesal said in a statement. "Upholding the spirit of Ramadan, government should review the cases against detained political activists immediately and set them free," he added. "JKPM will launch a valley-wide campaign to get justice for the political prisoners and arrange legal aid for them," Faesal added. Similarly, the PDP is also in the process of setting up of legal cell. "We have already so many lawyers who have been pleading cases. But we are now going to set up our own legal cell. This cell will be headed one among the lawyers associated with the PDP," a PDP leader said. Asked whether the lawyers associated with the PDP have provided any legal aid so far, he replied, "Who so ever approaches us, we provide them legal aid. Our lawyers also plead other political cases and matters. We will also provide legal aid to JKLF, Jamiet-e-Islami and other people arrested for stone pelting charges," he added. Earlier, senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beg said they were ready to provide legal assistance to both JeI and Yasin Malik-led JKLF in Supreme Court and the High Court. The National Conference has already set up legal cell headed by former advocate general. "Our legal team is providing all possible help whoso ever approaches us," an NC source said. In the last few months, the government authorities have launched a crackdown against Hurriyat leaders besides arresting scores of people associated with socio-religious groups. The political parties have criticized the government for banning JKLF and Jamiet-e-Islami. Although dates for assembly polls are yet to be announced, several political parties have set up or are in the process of establishing own legal cells for providing legal aid to political detainees apparently to woo voters. |
