Early Times Report

Udhampur, May 19: Members of Udhampur Development Council (UDC) today organized a press conference to review the ongoing progress of Devika Project at Udhampur under National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) scheme.
While addressing the media persons Anil Paba a social activist and president UDC alleged that project of River Devika has been diverted to drainage based instead of River based. He said that the Ministry of Environment and Forest, climate change (GoI) has prepared the DPR for the project as " Rejuvenation of Devika and Tawi River at Udhampur and later it has be limited to" Pollution abatement of River Devika and River Tawi at Udhampur town.
Paba added that amount sanctioned to the tune of Rs 186.74 crores has been diverted to drainage and Sewerage Treatment Plants and only Rs12 crores likely to be utilized for beautification, Ghats, community Halls, cremation ghats etc. It hurts the sentiment of millions of soul in Udhampur as there is no proposal for revival of River Devika at Udhampur and removal of unauthorized construction along the river Devika.
Paba wants an independent enquiry about the said project and asked the administration to take immediate steps to demarcate the Devika land right from Gangera hills to Nansoo temple and remove illegal encroachment so that the NRCP scheme worth Rs 186.74 crores can be implemented in its true letter and spirit while giving meaning to the aforesaid money spent from the exchequer.
