De-silt river Tawi before monsoon, demand villagers residing nearby
5/20/2019 11:13:34 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 20: Demanding desilting work of river Tawi to be undertaken in key areas at once, the residents of villages along the banks of river Tawi said that while cleaning of the water bodies is a regular feature during summer, the same should be undertaken before the monsoon in order to allow free flow of rain water. Addressing a press conference here today at Press Club of Jammu, the residents of villages near Tawi demanded to take immediate steps to desilt the river to prevent flooding in the neighbouring areas adding that the work should be taken up on priority as the monsoon is fast approaching nearer.
They said that huge amount of garbage is being dumped into the River Tawi. The issue is further been complicated by the order passed by the authorities with regard to putting a blanket ban on lifting of minor minerals including sand and stones thus raising the river bed to an alarming level. This dangerously raised level of river bed is a threat to the people living in the vicinity as the chances of inundation during monsoon season have increased manifold. Taking this risk into consideration, the locals residing near the banks of the river have demanded to desilt the river Tawi before the onset of monsoon.
They said the Government failed to start work of desilting of river Tawi despite several meetings with authorities concerned. "The issue had also been brought to the notice of the government several times, they said adding that "We are not demanding for the sake of one village alone, it is for all those residents living close to the banks of the river Tawi. The lackadaisical attitude of the government poses a threat of recurring flood in the neighbouring areas," they said. They recalled that residents of several areas including Phallian Mandal were severely affected during last year's devastating floods as they lost their cattle, homes and properties. The residents said if any untoward incident takes place then the responsibility on residents staying along the river Tawi lies with the State Government particularly Flood and Irrigation Department and Geology and Mining Department.
Those who were present on the occasion included Gulzar Singh, Subash Sharma (Ex. Sarpanch), Saudagar Singh Saini (Ex. Sarpanch), Amit Kumar, Sukhdev Sharma, Ramesh Chander, Vijay Sharma, Yashpal, Balwan Singh, Lai Chand, Manjit Singh and Sunil Bharti.
