Lok Sabha polls: Sajad Lone could be the 'biggest loser'
5/21/2019 11:22:46 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 21: Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone unlikely to win any parliamentary seat in Kashmir could prove to be a big jolt for the party, which has been claiming that it has emerged as an alternative for National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party in the Valley.
A Kashmir watcher said, "The Peoples Conference was able to win some seats in local bodies elections due to National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party staying away from these polls. Had these parties participated in these elections, PC would not have found it so easy to win the ULB and panchayat polls."
He said that Sajad Lone and his party activists tried their best to motivate the people in north Kashmir to vote for them in the recently held Lok Sabha elections but couldn't convert the votes of traditional parties in their favour. "In the Handwara and Kupwara areas, Sajad enjoys good support but in other areas his party couldn't do much. The PC's influence in north Kashmir is confined to few areas only. Another factor which could have gone against his party is that nearly 35% polling took place in north Kashmir's Baramulla constituency and the voters were scattered," the Kashmir watcher said, " Had people boycotted the polls it could have helped Sajad but it didn't happen."
An analyst said that "If Sajad fails to win the Baramulla seat, he would find himself in a tight spot as he has projected himself as an alternative to the traditional politicians. He had made people in New Delhi believe that he along with Ansaris can shake the very roots of the National Conference and PDP in Kashmir. Lok Sabha elections were very important for him and his party, which till date has not won the parliamentary seat in Kashmir."
The analyst said, "The exit polls not even making a mention of Peoples Conference in their survey report is an indication that Peoples Conference is just confined to two assembly constituencies in Kupwara and it has failed to attract the people in other areas."
He said, "One should appreciate Sajad for dreaming big. He with just two Assembly seats in his kitty had staked the claim to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir in November last year. Since the day J&K Assembly has been dissolved he has been projecting himself as the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir."
A politician said that the exit polls are predicting another term for BJP led NDA government in the country and for Sajad Lone and his friends it's a good news as it's an "open secret" that he is very close to the top BJP leadership. "But someone needs to tell him that to become the J&K Chief Minister, he would have to perform first and win some Assembly seats. Just being close to the BJP leadership is no qualification for heading the state," the politician added
