Early Times Report
Jammu, May 22: The Jammu and Kashmir Cooperative Marketing Society Kathua administration on Wednesday removed cemented doorsteps, constructed outside the shops without any prior information, leading into a heated exchange of words between shopkeepers and chairman.
According to Shopkeepers, who have taken on rent the shops of JK Cooperative Marketing Society complex for the last many years have informed Early Times that without any prior information the administration led by Chairman reached the spot along with an earthmover and started removing the steps.
"We have taken shops of Cooperative Society on rent and to run our business the compulsory doorsteps were constructed years back. If there was any problem to the administration they must have issued a notice as per legal course but it was an authoritative decision", a shopkeeper said
According to eyewitnesses, the Chairman had verbal spat with shopkeepers including a woman as well as an advocate. The cemented doorsteps were removed forcibly, which was totally unfortunate.
Meanwhile contingent of police rushed to the spot to pacify the situation and the shopkeepers decided to lodge a complaint with administration.
According to sources, the shopkeepers have not been allowing the administration to auction the shops due to which the management took such course of action. "To auction the shops is the right of administration as the shopkeepers have been giving a minimum rent to the Society. If an open action will be held, Society will earn a handsome amount", an official said, adding that the management has only removed the encroachments, made by shopkeepers.
"The complex has two entrances and the management had mooted a proposal to close one entrance and convert it into a shop, which was not acceptable to the shopkeepers", a shopkeeper said.
