Member NDMA reviews disaster preparedness scenario in Kargil

KARGIL, May 23: Member National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Lt Gen (Retd) N C Marwah along with Deputy Commissioner Kargil Baseer ul Haq Choudhary, who is also Chairman District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kargil, reviewed the status of disaster preparedness in the district.
Superintendent of Police Kargil Dr Vinod Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sonam Chosjor, SDM Drass Pawan Kotwal, SDM Sankoo Ghulam Mohiuddin Wani, SDM Shakar Chiktan Ghulam Mehdi, CMO, CEO, officers of Agriculture, Horticulture and Sheep Husbandry, Executive Engineers of various divisions besides other concerned officers of the Civil and Police Administration attended the meeting.
During the meeting, threadbare discussion was held on the preparedness of the DDMA to deal with disasters and natural calamities in the district.
The Deputy Commissioner Kargil apprised the Member NDMA about disaster scenario in the district due to cloudbursts, flafloods, agricultural drought, locust, snow avalanches, earthquake, landslides, cold waves etc.
The DC informed that the district needs augmented infra to deal with various eventualities and disaster situations and sought the intervention of the Member NDMA in this regard to effectively deal with eventualities.
The Member DDMA was urged to permanently station a team of NDMA at Kargil with all manpower and machinery to swiftly deal with disasters and calamities. Other requirements like the provision of satellite phones for an effective communication system in far-off and inaccessible areas of the district were also projected.
Lt Gen (Retd) Marwah, while appreciating the commitment of the District Administration in its efforts towards disaster risk management, assured all possible support from the NDMA to strengthen the DDMA in terms of necessary requirements.
While underlining the importance of awareness about various disasters and calamities at the community level, the Member NDMA called for the need to organize capacity building programmes for the general masses so as to impart knowledge about disaster-prone areas as well as the immediate ways and means to deal with disasters.
