PDP leaders avoid workers | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report Srinagar, May 23: Seeing their party president's defeat that too from a constituency which was considered her bastion, almost all PDP leaders went into hiding without meeting party workers. There was a complete silence at PDP headquarters on Thursday where only few leaders like Khurshid Alam, Noor Mohammad and Muntazir Mohidin were present. "A lot of workers came here, but no senior leader was present. Leaders are not able to face the workers as our party president has lost badly," a PDP source said. South Kashmir was considered bastion for PDP. But the party chief's defeat from Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency indicates losing ground of the PDP. During elections the PDP chief even failed to convince neighbours from her village in Bijbehara to vote for her. "She has lost ground in south Kashmir. Even her neighbours did not support her," Sharif Ahmad, a local of Bijbehara said. Although she did not meet any leader or worker, the PDP chief took to the social media. Reacting to her defeat, she Tweeted: "I've been fortunate to get the love &affection of my people. They have every right to express their anger for my failings. Accept their verdict with humility. Congratulations to winning candidates from NC. I'm grateful to my party workers and colleagues." In another Tweet, she said, "Congratulations to Narendra Modi ji for a historic mandate. Today surely belongs to BJP and its allies. Time for Congress to get an Amit Shah." A PDP insider said the PDP chief wanted to show her brave face to the workers. "She is really hurt as even her senior party leaders have left her alone after the fall of her government," the PDP insider said. Thursday's lost is the second electoral defeat for the PDP president since she joined politics in 1996. She had earlier lost the 1999 Lok Sabha polls from Srinagar to the NC's Omar Abdullah. The PDP president made her maiden entry in the Parliament in 2004 by defeating her rival NC candidate, Mehboob Beg by more than 38,000 votes from Anantnag constituency. From south Kashmir restive constituency, a retired High Court judge, Justice Hasnian Masoodi, who contested on the NC ticket, emerged as a winner. He defeated main opponents state Congress chief G A Mir and PDP president. Masoodi got 39898 votes followed by Mir with 32534, and the PDP president with 30068. 122898 votes were polled in the elections. |
