Now BJP can not give any excuse to delay UT status to Ladakh
5/25/2019 12:07:24 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 24: After giving a decisive mandate to BJP in the Parliament elections, people of Ladakh now wants the party to fulfill its commitment of granting Union Terroritory (UT) status to this mountainous region.
Like 2014 elections, BJP has also repeated its promise to granting UT status to Ladakh this time also but after getting historic victory in the election the party can not give any excuse to ignore this demand. Today BJP has absolute majority of its own in the Lok Sabha and similarly party has workable majority in the Rajya Sabha so there is no reason to adopt delay tactics in fulfilling this demand.
Credible sources said that during campaign of the elections, top BJP leadership had promised to grant UT status to Ladakh this time at any cost before announcement of assembly elections.
BJP's 33-year old candidate Jamyang Tsering Namgyal has won Lok Sabha seat by a margin of nearly 10,000 votes which is historic one.
Namgyal, the incumbent Chief Executive Councilor (CEC) of Leh Council, defeated his rival, Independent candidate Sajjad Hussain Kargili, who was backed by National Conference, PDP and influential Islamia School Kargil (ISK).
During the 2014 parliamentary poll, the BJP had won the seat for the first time by a margin of just 36 votes.
After his election as Lok Sabha member, Namgyal told media that
The issue of Union Territory (UT) for Ladakh was the top priority for me and this election was between the parties favouring UT demand and those against it. People have voted for the UT status because it is the BJP that has always been supporting this demand at regional, state and national level.
