Early Times Report

UDHAMPUR, May 26: Anil Paba a social activist and freelance archaeologist today visited the centuries old Baolis in Udhampur like Rani-di-Vaav, Raje-di-Vaav(Gangera hills), Rani Baoli ( Devika), Debreah baolis and others in a bid to mobilize a campaign to preserve these water bodies from extinction.
Paba said that water is referred to as "Jeevanam Sarva Jeevanam" meaning that entire world depends on water for survival. He added that District Udhampur is blessed with majestic water bodies in the shapeof Baolis, ponds etc and these water bodies were well preserved by our ancestors in order to survive any drought conditions and also served as a place for social gathering and religious ceremonies.
Paba hi said that we have witnessed centuries old historical Baolis in Udhampur and carved with beautiful sculptures, scripts, figurines of local deities, local heroes and pictures of different motifs which tells the existence of our civilization, rich culture, artistic skill of the time.
Paba added that to our dismay that some historical Baolis are used for unauthorized dumping of solid waste and filled with garbage and others have encroached and destroyed during the construction of National Highways and other road projects.
As the water is essential for survival and flowering of civilization and ritual ceremonies, he appealed to the common man to preserve the natural heritage in the shape of Baoilies, ponds for the coming generations to fulfill the scarcity of water.
