Democracy is all about numbers

Democracy is the government by majority and in this respect it is the game of numbers and this has amply been proved in the recently held Lok Sabha elections of 2019. While democracy is all about numbers but then national issues, nationalism, patriotism, country's security and the aspirations of the people as well as achievements of the ruling party played their part in 2019 general elections. Therefore, it can be safely argued that national issues as well as the people's aspirations shape the elections as has been the case in this historical election which gave a significant mandate to Narendra Modi and his BJP. The party crossed the magic figure of 272 Lok Sabha seats and rose to 303 seats individually and the NDA as a whole crossed 350 mark and thus this election and the elections results were extra ordinary as it brought down the steam of the dynastic parties and the bonhomie of SP-BSP-NLD and the high handedness of Mamta Benerjee in West Bengal. In fact, this election was the narrative of national politics and patriotism which played a great role in dismantling the caste politics and gave a serious blow to caste engineering and this is a good omen for our matured electorate. In the ultimate analysis, the common voter triumphed and gave to himself a stable, strong and good government which will come up to its expectations and will deliver on the poll promises. The voters have made a decisive judgment and have given themselves a masboot sarkar and have defeated those who would have given a majboor sarkar of mahamilawati gathbandhan in the terminology of Narendra Modi. This is a welcome development indeed. People by and large have voted for a decisive, bold, strong and stable government which can take India to new heights in the international arena. People have voted for the stable government in the hope that the government will fight monster of terrorism and secessionism and give a severe blow to anti-national elements in J&K and elsewhere in the country. Thus, the election while being a game of numbers which the elections are in a democracy but this general election the people have voted for nationalism, patriotism and also for fulfilling their aspirations while the local issues were muted and kept in backburner. This fact has come to light again that general elections are fought on the basis of national issues and the local issues are eclipsed by the all dominating national narrative and national themes and priorities. Along with this reality the shrewd voters have also dismantled the dynastic politics for the revival and strength of democracy and its growth. Thus, dynastic politics was defeated by and large and the first and foremost being the dynastic politics of congress. Not only the congress's dynastic politics was defeated but there are a number of dynasties all over India that too need to be defeated and the voters have done it and have saved democracy from being a dynastic hegemony. The voters have seen through their trick of plundering the national wealth and resources and thus have the matured and silent voters taught these dynastic parties a lesson by voting them out. Therefore, those who had an eye on national wealth and were out to plunder it were shown the door. For this the voters deserve all kudos and appreciation. The electorate has rejected neo-Raja's of our dynastic politics and have taught them a lesson. Back to the main theme that dominated the election narrative were nationalism, country's security, patriotism and the people's desire to have a stable and strong government which can work within and without and take India to the pinnacle of high growth trajectory and to a place of pride in the world community. Thank God that voters have bid adieu to dynasts rallying under the umbrella of Mahagathbanhan to perpetuate their rule in future. Over the years democracy in India has degenerated and hijacked by dynasties of- "few, by the few and for the few" This indeed is a sad commentary but the Indian voter has done it well to have dismantled the dynasties and had virtually brought them down. They are now demoralized and are just doing resignation drama as a damage control exercise. The resignation spree is the galore as the state congress chiefs and the young scion of the party Rahul has offered to resign as he has taken the responsibility of the defeat of Congress party on himself. Anyhow these elections have proved beyond doubt that democracy is all about numbers. The election results have proved that national issues and people's aspirations have impacted the election results and arithmetic. PM Modi has rightly said that democracy is about the numbers but governance is about consensus and not on the basis of majority vote. Long live Indian democracy and down the dynastic politics but this is a very herculean task as the dynastic syndrome is seeing everywhere in all federating units of India and we have to make efforts to free the states from dynasts and their exploitation.
