'Admin eager to close down our momo business'
Residents of Gorkha Nagar tell Munish Gupta

Early Times Report
Jammu, June 25: The residents of Gorkha Nagar, who are mainly associated with business of Chinese food particularly momos, allege that the civil and police administration is hell-bent on closing down their business.
The people narrated their woes to Munish Gupta, Editor Early Times during his mass contact programme at Gorkah Nagar which falls under Ward No. 48 of Jammu Municipal Corporation. They said their area is famous for selling momos and other fast food items, but some political parties have launched a movement against sale of momos alleging that the famed Chinese eatable is not good for health.
"Most of our families are associated with momo business and are earning their livelihood from it, but the crackdown by the civil and police administration has left many jobless," said Naveen Sharma, adding that police have directed them to close their shops and reharies before 9 pm, which has been causing harm to their business as the customers love to come out till late night.
"Although we maintain hygiene in preparation of momos, we are penalised on trifle issues deliberately. Inspection of food items by the authorities concerned is good thing provided the motive behind it should be genuine. But cracking down on these small set ups is totally political motivated," the momo traders said.
Meanwhile, many residents rued lack of sanitation in their area. Cleaning of lanes and drains is totally ignored by the authority concerned and sweeper hardly pays visit to the area for cleaning purpose.
"The bund of canal which passes from Gorkha Nagar is broken at many places due to which water overflows. We asked the Irrigation department to repair the bund, but nothing has been done till date," said Pritam Singh.
The drains are blocked at many places due to faulty drainage system due to which water remains stagnant while lanes are not cleaned by the sweeper. The situation becomes more serious in summer and in rainy season as well. "We pay to sweeper from our own pocket for cleaning drains and lanes," said Saroj Thapa, SP Rana, Uma Devi, Jasoda Devi and Sunita Thapa.
"We tried a lot to get ourselves enrolled in voter list but those who claim to be the representatives of the area ignored us. Even some voter cards have name mistakes and nobody is helping us for their corrections," said Baljeet Singh and Ritu.
"We have a Ram Leela stage in our area which is not constructed properly. After a lot efforts we got a stage sanctioned. But work has not started. We want that during Navratra, the main gate of the area should be decorated with lightings at par with Raghunath Bazaar," said Raj Kumar and Rajeev Kashyap.
One of the major issues confronted by the residents of Gorkha Nagar is contaminated water being supplied by the PHE due to supply breakage of pipes at many places.
The valves points of PHE supply are the main source of water contamination. These pipes have never been repaired. "The water supply remains on for very short time and we get no time to store water for daily purposes. The water bills are increasing every year, but in the name of service, supply is being decreased. We have observed that dirty water of Tawi is directly supplied to us without treating it. At many places the PHE pipes are passing through drains," said Polli Devi, Anu, Goma Devi, Kashmir Kour and Chaman Lal.
There has been facing huge power fluctuation "in our area as during summer the capacity of transformer installed is of low capacity due to which we receive low voltage," said Suraj Bahadur.
"We are very poor and live in one room and have no toilet facility. I had to go to work for my running house and tried lot to get financial assistance. Unemployment is the major issue in the area as hundreds of youth remain jobless," said Champa, Meenu Sharma.
Vikram Singh expressed serious concern over power wires which remain hanging in the lane, posing threat to humans.
