Differences surface in Hurriyat on talks
6/26/2019 12:17:36 AM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 25: Even as Governor SP Malik recently said that Hurriyat was ready for talks with New Delhi, differences have surfaced in the separatist camp on the issue.
While the Hurriyat (M) headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq told media that the party was ready for talks with the central government, his counterpart and another senior leader Syed Ali Geelani, who heads the Hurriyat (G) has been silent on the issue.
Sources said Hurriyat (G) is yet to arrive to conclusion on the issue and thus the party has refrained from commenting over the same.
Sources said the Hurriyat (G) chairman had reservations in issuing statement on the issue unless he gets a nod from his masters in Pakistan.
Sources said while the Mirwaiz led Hurriyat leaders have come to consensus that talks with New Delhi were inevitable for resolution to Kashmir issue, a similar meeting held by Geelani has failed to come to consensus.
"Both the parties had held separate meetings to come up with resolution on need to start dialogue with New Delhi. While the Mirwaiz faction has decided in one voice to go ahead with any such offer, the Hurriyat (G) has been unable to make its stand clear," said a source privy to the two groups.
Meanwhile a few days after the Governor said that separatists in Kashmir are ready for talks, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that 'dialogue' is the only way to resolve the Kashmir problem.
Talking to media, the 46-year-old separatist, who is also the head priest, reiterated his stand for talks.
"We have always been in favour of talks as the means of resolution. We have not said anything new…Kashmiris being the most affected party for the past 72 years naturally want its resolution," he said.
While the Hurriyat (M) is clear on the policy, Hurriyat (G) has issues.
