Use of polythene continues unabated across state
6/26/2019 11:49:29 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, June 26: Despite an ecologically sensitive state, the use of polythene carry bags along with other plastic items continues unabated across the state as the authorities watch helplessly.

Earlier during the coalition government, initially the government had banned the usage of polythene carry-bags below thickness of 50 microns.
After that order by the government, the polythene carry bags manufacturers had come up with polythene carry bags of high thickness and it was also decided to recycle the used polythene carry bags. "But after the introduction of new polythene carry bags, no such move was initiated by the government and the decision actually badly impacted the environment", an environmentalist said, adding that the earlier polythene were less thick but the new polythene bags were much thick, adding more to the problem.
In the month of March 2019, the General Administration Department (GAD) had issued an order instructing the government officials not to use plastic bottles for drinking water but still the plastic bottles have been used in government offices and there was no let up in its usage.
Moreover the government had also issued an order, completely banning the polythene carry bags but still there was no serious action from government side. "Time and again the environmentalists have demanded complete ban on the use of polythene carry bags along with plastic items but no serious efforts have so far been made by government to get rid of such a dangerous item for environment as well as mankind", another environmentalist said.
Time and again the Pollution Control Department officials patted their backs, after the seizure of a small consignment of polythene carry bags but it was merely a photo-session as to control the menace of polythene and plastic, administrative actions are required but so far administration has failed in this direction.
The environmentalists appealed the Governor administration to take serious view of the matter and implement complete ban on plastic as well as polythene carry bags.
