Landslide prone belt still under repair as Amarnath Yatra starts

Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, July 2: Even as the annual yatra of Shri Amarnath Ji has started, the landslide prone belt right from Jakhani to Sarmoli in district Udhampur is still under repair which could act as a major hindrance in the smooth movement of the traffic particularly those vehicles carrying pilgrims of the holy cave shrine.
The 12 kms long stretch on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is a landslide prone area where the road often gets blocked due to the regular mudslide resulting in long queues of vehicles.
Sources informed that work to concretize the slopes to fix the problem of landslides was allotted to a company but the work could not be completed despite the lapse of deadline last year.
The Amarnath pilgrims may find themselves in long queues for hours if it rains as the landslide on the Jakhani stretch is inevitable when it rains and mostly results in long jams for hours together.
Amidst all this lackadaisical attitude of the concerned authorities, however, spirits are high among the public, civil society and others in Udhampur who warmly welcomed the Amarnath Yatra yesterday.
Meanwhile, locals appealed to Governor and DC Udhampur to look into the matter and instruct the road construction company to speed up the repair work.
