Open manholes pose serious threat to residents of Press-Morh Bawe

Jammu, July 5: The construction of sewerage line in Press-Morh locality of Babe, has made the lives of residents difficult with choked drains coupled with open manholes, which pose serious threat to the locals.
Moreover with no construction of drains in the locality, people have been facing threat of sinking of their houses during the rains, while some people have abandoned their houses, apprehending trouble.
Residents of Press Morh expressed resentment against the agency, executing the laying of sewerage line in the area, while some castigated the elected representatives for denying them basic amenities.
"The main road connecting our locality has not been constructed for the last over two decades. Some youth of the locality with the help of Corporator got the drain constructed near their houses but not complete. The drain near our houses is in bad shape and sinking, posing serious threat to our houses, which could also sink-in during rains", a local said, adding that they were daily wage workers and could not repair the drain on their own but those, who were financially sound, they got the lanes constructed through the government agencies or on their own.
The locals further said that the MLA had not visited the locality, since he was elected to power. "The politicians only visited the houses, when they need our votes but after election they forget the poor as well as their problems", locals rued, adding that the elected representatives only gave lip service to the basic issues of the locals.
The locals further claimed that some locality members have abandoned some portion of their houses, fearing its collapse due to sinking of the drains.
"The agency had dug up the drains to lay sewerage line and dumped the garbage along the walls of houses. On Thursday rains choked drains along with garbage dump pushed water into several houses, creating chaos like situation", the locals said, adding that the sewerage-line laying agency has kept some manholes open, posing serious threat to people.
"Even there are no street lights in the locality while the open manholes could prove fatal for someone passing through the lane especially children and the elderly people", the locals said, adding that for the last over six months, they have been getting assurances of completion of the sewerage line but for the last two months, none of the person has visited the locality to complete the work.
Raising finger over the concept of laying sewerage-line, some locals, who worked as plumber claimed that it was a failed concept. "The pipe connecting two manholes is merely 6 centimetres in diameter and even if a polythene carry bag will struck in any pipe, it will completely choked up", they claimed adding that the locals have been facing hardships during laying of sewerage line and it would continue to create problems for years to come.
The locals have also been facing problems on account of erratic water supply by Public Health Engineering Department (PHE). "PHE has not permanent timing of supply and even they supply water for few minutes, which is not adequate to meet the basic requirements of drinking", the locals claimed.
