Headstand: An upside down world for extraordinaire Pankaj
7/6/2019 11:50:24 PM
KUNAL SHRIVATSA

Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 5: For 44 years-old Pankaj Mohan of Janipur locality in Jammu city, the world, it seems, is upside down as he can keep his head on ground and legs in air (Headstand- Salamba Shirshasana) effortlessly for hours together. Performing and practicing Headstand to perfection in a public park near his residence is a daily ritual for Pankaj for the last more than two years.
It may be mentioned here that Headstand or Yoga Headstand (Salamba Shirshasana), often shortened to 'Shirshasana' is an inverted 'asana' in modern yoga; it was described as both an 'asana' and a 'mudra' in classical 'hatha yoga'.
"It (Headstand) all started out of sheer fun coupled with growing concern for a sharp hair fall being experienced by me about two and a half years ago," said Pankaj Mohan.
"I read somewhere that Headstand helps in prevention of hair fall so it was how I started to practice Headstand," he added.
Initially, Pankaj used to enact Headstand with the support of a wall to balance the posture while the duration in earlier stages was just for few minutes. However, a determined Pankaj wanted to do something extraordinary and what better than to improve his timing of Headstand viz-a-viz doing it without any support. He spent hours to achieve the unbelievable and a day came when he could easily perform the Headstand for an hour and even few minutes beyond that.
"In the beginning I used to perform Headstand for few minutes but with the course of time I realized that this (Headstand) could be done for longer durations and this idea got stuck in my mind," said Pankaj.
"Slowly and steadily, I began to do it with perfection for longer durations and that too without any kind of support. And, now I can perform Headstand for more than an hour (63 minutes to be precise)," he added.
While elaborating on his future plans, Pankaj told that he wants to get due recognition for his feat adding that he is already in touch with few organizations to be able to get a suitable platform where he could showcase his unusual skill.
"I have already started the pursuit to accomplish my goal as I performed in a programme held in connection with the International Yoga Day on June 21 at Palm Island, Akhnoor Road Jammu. It was organized by Dainik Jagran," said Pankaj.
"I wish to show the world that Jammu city has no dearth of talent. It is only the right kind of opportunities where we lag," he added.
