'Dilapidated, faulty drainage system creates mess across Nai Basti'
Residents dub Congress, BJP opportunistic parties
7/11/2019 11:20:01 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, July 11: Coming down heavily against BJP and Congress for back tracking from their promises for uplifting the areas by constructing new lanes, drains, the residents of Nai Basti alleged that these opportunistic leaders never turned up after winning elections to take stock of problems.
The residents told their grievances to Editor Early Times Munish Gupta, during his mass contact programme at Nai Basti, who would be contesting forthcoming assembly election as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar. The residents were up in arms against the local leaders for overlooking their problems.
Drains/ Lanes/ Cleanliness
"There is a pathetic condition of drains in our lanes. The entire drainage system is faulty due to which water doesn't get passage for its outlet. Moreover the main drain which is connecting to these drains is choked and dirty water finds no place for its passage. We are continuously giving representations to the concerned department, ministers for the last 5-6 years for its redressal. Recently we wrote and met to Advisor to Governor regarding this problem but nothing happened. Choked drains emanate foul smell and spreading numerous diseases. Now when rainy season has set in, the problem has been multiplied making for us difficult to live and breathe in these inhuman conditions. The leaders who won elections have befooled the masses with their hollow slogans. What can be more disgraceful thing that relative show reluctance to visit here due to this mess. We want that the concerned authority should focus only on cleanliness and nothing else. A very shocking incident took place recently that authority got removed the grills which were put on drains by saying that same will be replaced with new one but it has been months, nobody has turned up to put new grills on these drains and in absence of them the condition has deteriorated more," said Sukhdev Singh. Similar was the complaints of other residents of the area, who criticised the concerned authority for its failure to look after the sanitation problems. "The drains are totally broken, lanes are dilapidated which need immediate repair. With dilapidated drains, the water seeps into the base of houses resulting the base is sinking posing threat to entire building and same is situation with the other residents also. Now we have started their repair. It has been more than a year the drains have not been cleaned. There is no slope of many drains and water remains stagnant. The drain should be dug deep so that dirty water doesn't overflow. The best solution to the problem of drains is that it should be dug in the middle of lane due to which it will never damage the base of house. The grills have been removed from the drains for the last eight months which have not been replaced till date. Congress, BJP governments didn't do anything," said Bimla, Girdhari Lal, Sunita, Anju Bala, Renu Sharma, Jugal Gupta, Raj Rani, Darshan Lal, Soudargar Ram, Ashok Kumar, Polli.
Drug Menace
Drug menace has spread its tentacles in this area also. "My two sons have become drug addict from last two years due to which our life has totally derailed. The drug peddlers sell drugs to youths in this area. Although we have put them in anti drug medication from doctor but after some days of restrictions they tend to fall in drugs again. Our life has become hell. Police should take strict action against such anti social elements who sell drugs to youth. Sometime, they remain sleep for 3-4 days after taking drug.
Electric Poles posing threat
PDD electric pole near shop at Vijay Chowk of Nai Basti has been posing serious threat. "The pole is very closely attached with my shop which has become danger for me. I live in fear all the time as any untoward incident can claims many precious human lives. I requested to the department for its realignment many a time but no action has been taken," said Karishan Lal, shopkeeper.
Poverty
Vidya Devi, an elderly woman (85), having short of sight expressed her woes of poverty, who lives in house which has developed cracks and have financial assistance to get them repaired. "I being an old unable to move out individually yet went to BJP, Congress leaders requesting them to help but instead of empty assurances nothing happened," she said.
Similarly, another elderly woman, Leela Devi, who was so dejected on the attitude of local leaders for their ignorance, who is living in very dismal condition. "My house is very down from the lanes due to which water enters in my house, which has made my life like hell. I asked for financial help from government, leaders but nobody turned up help me," she said.
No Old Age Pension
Vijay Devi said that despite submission of 'Old Age Pension' application with the department, I have been waiting for the same.
