Days of Rohingyas in India may be numbered
7/12/2019 12:25:55 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, July 11: The days of Rohingyas in India could be numbered. There is a loud clamour across the country against the presence of Rohingyas in different parts of the country as the people and agencies consider them a live "threat to national security and the country's demographics". That the days of the Rohingyas in India could be numbered could be seen from the fact that the Supreme Court (SC) of India on July 10 "agreed to accord a final hearing to petitions challenging the Narendra Modi-led Central Government's decision to deport illegal Rohingya immigrants to Myanmar". The Modi Government is of the view that the matter concerning the Rohingyas be left to the care of the country's executive.
This proposed "final hearing would be conducted in August". A Supreme Court bench consisting of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose has asked both the parties to "submit written submissions in the meantime". SC will also hear petitions in support of the deportation during the hearing.
The litigation began in 2017 when two Rohingyas from Jammu - Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir - purportedly registered as refugees under the United Nations High Commission of Refugees (UNHCR) approached the apex court and demanded refugee status for the Rohingyas in India.
Their petition had argued that the "deportation of Rohingya is in contravention to equal rights and liberty promised to every person under the Indian Constitution". "This act would also be in contradiction with the principle of 'Non-Refoulement', which has been widely recognized as a principle of Customary International Law", their petition had further added.
According to an official estimate, around 40,000 illegal Rohingyas stand to be deported from India to Myanmar. They are currently settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan. According to unofficial figures, their number could be over one lakh. As for J&K, thousands of Rohingyas have been settled at 42 locations in Jammu city and around it and the people have been demanding their deportation since years now.
