SRINAGAR, July 16: A constituency of Central Kashmir's Budgam district represented by a former chief minister has turned up as one of the neglected constituencies of the state since the former head of the state failed to meet expectations of the common masses.
On Monday (July 15) thousands of residents of Budgam district carried out a protest and observed a complete shutdown against the state government. The residents took pot shots at the failure of the state administration alleging it of lackadaisical attitude in improving the road network in their areas.
In 2015 a project of improving the road from Khag to Aaripanthan was approved and the same was to be completed on June 30, 2019. The total project cost was Rs 13 crores and the total road length to be covered under the project was 11 kilometers. Over the past four years or so very little work has been done with the common masses feeling the heat.
A group of residents of the area said that the road right from Khag to Aaripanthan was to be widened and it had to be made 40 feet. They said that out of 40 feet 25 feet had to macadamize adding that very little progress has been made in the case.
"It is a pity that despite the area being represented by a former chief minister no signs of development are visible on the ground. We have been forced to feel the heat for no fault of ours and up to this moment of time nobody has come to our rescue," said the residents.
It would be in place to mention here that the areas that were supposed to be covered under the project fall under the jurisdiction of Beerwah assembly constituency. The constituency was represented by former chief minister and National Conference Vice President, Omar Abdullah in the previous assembly.
The residents said that the state government has miserably failed to compensate the people whose land was to be utilized for the road project. They said the government pleaded in a court of law that the work has been hampered due to procedural wrangles involved with the compensation part of the land involved.
"The court made it clear to the state government that the work should go ahead and it should be stopped only at places where there is some dispute over the land involved. Despite the fact that the project was to be taken under the Central Road Fund no significant progress has been made over the past four years or so," said the residents.
Residents demanded that Governor Satya Pal Malik should take personal interest in the matter and issue orders for the speedy completion of the road project. They said the same would give a fillip to the tourism since the road acts as a gateway to the famous tourist destination of Tosamaidan. |
