Garbage dumps, dilapidated lanes, drains irk Shastri Nagar residents
7/17/2019 11:02:40 PM
JAMMU, July 17: Criticising BJP and Congress for making hollow promises of providing basic amenities in the area, the shopkeepers and residents of Shastri Nagar alleged that they have been facing a number of problems due to heaps of garbage, dilapidated lanes and drains in the area which has been facing official neglect.
Neeraj Kumar, Surinder, Tarsem Lal, Sunny, Prince, Pankaj, Rakesh Kumar, Sunil Verma, Ajay Kumar and others told that they felt like sitting on heaps of garbage due to the non-serious approach of the concerned authority whose primary job is to ensure sanitation and the prevailing situation is also posing health hazards for the inhabitants.
"In our area, most of the drains remain choked due to less number of safaikaramcharis. Moreover, there is no mechanism to remove the silt from the lanes after cleaning of drains, an exercise which takes place only after repeated requests of the people", they stated, adding that there is need to fixing responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and proper sanitation in residential areas as it is their basic right to live in a clean environment.
They also added that despite repeated pleas to the concerned authorities for installing a dustbin in front Chowk they did nothing. Entire garbage is dumped near Shamshan Ghat Shastri Nagar as well as on-road side . The foul smell emanating from heaps of garbage gives sleepless night. Even some vacant plots, as well as drains, are filled with garbage has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies.
They added that a number of lanes and roads of the area without street lights and wherever it has been installed are not functioning. They also said that locals as well as visitors are facing inconvenience due to bad roads and choked drains, in some cases even leading to accidents but nothing has been done so far.
They alleged that several crores have been withdrawn for maintenance of lanes and drains but nothing has changed on the ground.
