Srinagar Ring Road in suspended animation

Early Times Report
budgam, July 17: Farmers affected by Srinagar Semi Ring Road once again held a protest in Budgam on Wednesday to highlight their demand of fair compensation.
The framers allege that government is making unnecessary delays in payment of compensation to the people. The agitating farmers later on met Deputy Commissioner Budgam who assured them to take up the issue with Governor's administration.
With an aim of creating hassle-free movement of army and other security force vehicles on Srinagar Jammu highway (NH 44), the government took up Srinagar Ring Road construction work with Home Minister Amit Shah recently during his 2-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.
As the frequent congestion of traffic from Awantipora to Baramulla has led to chaos among commuters and security forces, the same could have been reduced had there been an alternate highway. But in-spite of tenders being invited and allotted for the project connecting Gallandar in Pampore with Ganderbal via Chadoora, Budgam, Narbal, Sarai Dangarpora, the work on the project has not been taken up as there are issues related to land acquisition. The affected farmers are not ready to give land for this alternate highway as they say they are being given less compensation by government.
"Srinagar Ring road can be helpful not only to local commuters but this will be of great help to security forces going to North Kashmir and Ladakh. The highway will he helpful to Amarnath Yatris as well because they would not have to cross Lasjan bypass via Nowgam, Bemina or Shalteng which are the most congested places that witness frequent traffic jams. The vehicles going to North Kashmir's Kupwara and Baramulla will also not get struck in traffic jams. Our only demand is fair compensation. We have now again brought the matter into DC Budgam's notice who assured to get our meeting fixed with Governor," said G A Paul, president Land Owners Welfare Committee.
Pertinently, Budgam is the most affected district in the Ring Road project as more than 4700 kanals of land is to be acquired by government for construction of this alternate highway.
