Jammu, July 17: Every year the arrival of monsoon becomes nightmare for the residents of Nanak Nagar Sector No. 5-9 and its adjoining areas as the water of overflowing drains enter into their houses which reach to the level from 2-5 feet.
It has become common affair for them to face this challenge every year during monsoon and in absence of help from the concerned authority, the residents have to spend this span of time fighting this problem from the forefront which causes damage to their property and giving them a horrible experience for the rest of the year.
The majority of the houses near drain which passes through narrow bylanes dotted with houses, a short spell of rain results in swelling of the drains and water gushes into their houses. The majority of the houses which are affected from this menace, their walls can be seen damaged. To minimise the damage to their house, the affected residents construct makeshift walls in the entry point of their houses, the doors inside the house before arrival of monsoon so that water may not enter the house.
"As soon as it starts rain, we begin to guard our houses as the drain water overflowed we are scared that the water may enter our houses. As a makeshift arrangement, we raise protection wall with varying height from 2-5 feet in the entrance points to restrict the entry of water before the onset of rainy season. Once the monsoon is over we dismantle this makeshift protection walls," said Raj Rani Arora, Pyar Kour, Pankaj Sharma. Whosoever the provision of multi-storey building, they shift from ground floor to first floor for 2-3 months.
Due to negligence of the concerned authority, it has become common affair for the residents, who alleged that drains are never cleaned or dug deep so that water may not overflow but inaction from the government has been adversely affecting the residents living nearby this drain.
