Nanak Nagar drain: A monster in rainy season
7/18/2019 11:06:43 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, July 18: The main drain of Nanak Nagar Sector 5 becomes a monster during rainy season, thanks to the apathy of the administration which does not take corrective measure before onset of monsoon forcing the residents to live in fear all the time.
Continuing its mass contact programme, Munish Gupta, Editor Early Times, who would be contesting upcoming assembly elections in the State as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency met the residents of Nanak Nagar and made them aware about his vision.
This drain which as 10-15 feet width has been virtually converted into garbage dumping place due to which water in drain get inadequate space when incessant rains take place resulting flood like situation occur. High areas remain safe from this problem while low areas face the fury of this drain when it takes shape of monster during monsoon.
"As soon as monsoon starts we start living in fear as the continuous rains more than three hours the drain starts overflows from its brim and enters into our houses nearby it which creates havoc. The protection wall on drain in front of our house has been broken which has increased our worries as there is every possibility of water enter our house," said PS Manhas resident of Nanak Nagar Sec-5.
Another resident, Shubh Lata said that presently two members are living in the family including herself and her husband, who is bed-ridden due to some disease and nobody is there to help us during this monsoon. "Sudden rise in water in drain creates problem for us to handle the situation due to prolonged ailment of my husband.
"We talked to the concerned authority to raise protection walls so that water may not enter our house but it seems that authority has turned deaf ears to this problem and waiting some untoward incident to take place," she said. Jagdish Raj informed that he has raised makeshift protection walls to save his family and house from this danger. "Our area is situated in low altitude due to which there is huge current of water in the drain. Moreover the accumulation of silt has reduced the depth of drain due to which water comes out immediately. If drain is cleaned regularly and dug nearly five feet in depth, then the flood like situation can be avoided. We requested the authority and concerned leaders of BJP and Congress to find the solution to this problem but they instead of hollow assurances did nothing and they have left us to face the fury of nature," he said. Similarly, Asha Devi, Darshan Lal, Sham Lal raised their concern on this issue.
