Amid Yatra, Srinagar stinks as SMC employees up in arms against Deputy Mayor
7/20/2019 12:42:37 AM
Early Times Report
srinagar, July 19: Even as thousands of devotees are visiting the summer capital of Srinagar in connection with the annual Amaranth Ji Yatra pilgrimage, heaps of garbage and stench greet the visitors as the Srinagar Municipal Corporation employees have gone on indefinite strike against their Deputy Mayor, Shiekh Imran.
Terming Imran a "Nautanki who performs stunts on social media", the protesters said the man already wanted for financial irregularities should look into his own deeds before pointing fingers at others in the SMC.
The protesters said hundreds of employees are without salaries whereas the "non-professional" behavior of the Deputy Mayor has taken toll on the working of the SMC.
The SMC employees said Imran was poking nose in everything only to show is power on social media.
"We want to tell this man known for having grabbed crores of rupees of bank loan and other financial irregularities that he should first correct his own deeds before trying to point fingers on others," the protesters said.
They said they would move Anti-Corruption Bureau against the Deputy Mayor. "When a case has already been lodged against him, ACB should question him rather than giving him a free hand on governance. Otherwise also a tainted character should not raise fingers at us," said one official at the SMC.
Sources said the protesting employees have conveyed it to the higher officials to replace Imran or that they would continue with the strike.
Meanwhile the Yatris in Srinagar complained of poor sanitation as heaps of garbage have piled up across the summer capital in wake of strike call by the SMC employees.
Despite repeated attempts the Deputy Mayor was not available for comments. But the SMC official confirmed about the strike."We are looking into the issue and it will be solved in a day or so. There's only some question," the official said.
