Potholed lanes, clogged drains have become an eyesore, say residents

Early Times Report
Jammu, July 21: Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly election as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar Assembly constituency, on Sunday conducted an extensive tour of Nanak Nagar Sector 7-8 as a part of his mass contact programme.
During his visit, the residents informed Munish Gupta about the basic problems being faced by them particularly poor sanitation, dilapidated roads and lanes and by-lanes, choked drains, and the perennial problem of water shortage.
The people said that potholed lanes and by-lanes and clogged drains have become an eyesore for them, but redressal of these problems is nowhere in sight.
While interacting with the residents, Munish Gupta also learned that the residents are facing several other grave issues like water scarcity, erratic electricity, insanitary conditions, damaged streetlights, etc.
"Water is a rare commodity here," the residents told Munish Gupta. They said that drinking water is not being supplied on regular basis. Due to irregular supply of drinking water, "we are unable to carry out our routine work including cooking and washing", Param Jeet Kour , a resident, said
"The insanitary condition in our ward needs immediate attention as it is the issue to be redressed on priority due to fear of outbreak of diseases in this scorching heat", said Robinder Pal Kour, a Sector 7 resident said, adding that more manpower is required to tackle this insanitary issue. She added that the department concerned has failed to provide required dustbins, as a result filth is scattered on roads here and there.
Another local resident Ujagar Singh told Munish Gupta that the lane leading to his residence is in shambles for past few years or so but nobody from the authorities concerned has bothered to get it repaired. He said that face-lifting of lanes and drains will be a huge favour for the area.
The other lanes of the area are also in a pathetic condition as they have developed pot holes which are causing regular mishaps. "However, the authorities are least bothered about these things," the residents said in unison.
Several other inhabitants of the area informed Munish Gupta that pathetic condition of lanes and drains is a major cause of concern for them, adding that those lanes which were blacktopped years ago are in a bad shape while there are several other lanes which still need to be metaled.
One of the residents of Sector 7, Prof Ganjeet Singh, raised the issue of non-functional streetlights and unhygienic conditions in the locality. "Though there are streetlights installed in our locality, but most of them are out of order. We carry a torch if we have to move out during late hours. It seems we are living in an era of darkness. Moreover we are also facing problems due to poor sanitation and sewerage system," Singh added.
