Advisor Kumar inaugurates Eye Bank at GMC, Jammu

JAMMU, July 22: Advisor to Governor K Vijay Kumar today inaugurated a state-of-the-art Eye Bank at Government Medical College Jammu, dedicated to restoring sight to the corneal blind.
Equipped with all necessary equipments for Corneal Transplant procedures, the Eye Bank will provide a full scope of services ranging from counseling for families, cornea/eye collection besides processing and distribution of corneas to the needy.
Speaking on the occasion, the Advisor said that this facility will enable the hospital to provide life-changing surgeries and restore sight of many people- a significant step towards reducing corneal blindness in the state.
He asked GMC to take efforts towards creating awareness around eye donation and encouraging people to pledge for donating their eyes after death, so that many suffering from corneal blindness can gain vision.
He asked for wide publicity to make public aware about this new Eye Bank facility available to the people.
The Advisor also inspected the infra available and existing facilities in the Modular Eye OT and interacted with the doctors and students, besides visiting the site for upcoming Spinal Injury Center.
Meanwhile, the Advisor inaugurated Digital Medical Lecture Theater at GMC.
He also inaugurated the Curriculum Implementation Support Programme - a three day Workshop on Faculty development in order to teach and train the faculty of the Medical College in implementation of new medical curriculum introduced by the Medical Council of India.
During the event, Advisor interacted with the medical faculty of this institution and observer from Medical Council of India as well as the resource persons for the said workshop Prof. Dr Ashok Sharma (Coordinator-MEU/Curriculum Committee), Dr Vishal Tandon, Dr Rajesh Sharma, Dr Rachna Magotra and Dr Mohd Razak.
Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu Dr Sunanda Raina congratulated the participants faculty members and observer MCI and assured that all efforts are being made for successful implementation of medical curriculum in totality as proposed by MCI.
Later, the Advisor convened a meeting with various officials to review status of supplies of drug, equipments and machinery to various associated hospitals of GMC Jammu. It was attended by Principal & Dean, GMC Jammu, MD JK Medical Supplies Corporation Ltd. Shiv Kumar Gupta, Administrator, Associated Hospitals, Jammu Smita Sethi, Medical Superintendents, GMC & Associated Hospitals, Jammu and the senior officials of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical wing of the GMC Jammu.
