New Delhi, Aug 17 : BJP MP from Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal on Friday said he was happy that Ladakh was being discussed at the UN Council meet.
The BJP MP further said that it is after the Narendra Modi-led government's decision that revoked Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, that Ladakh is being discussed. The newly-elected BJP MP also went to rebuke the Congress party by saying, "Earlier when Congress was in power, Ladakh was not even discussed in the Parliament let alone at the UN council." Jamyang Tsering Namgyal's comments came a day after a closed-door meeting was held on Friday at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in order to discuss New Delhi's move to abrogate Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.
While on Friday, India, at the rare closed-door UNSC meet, said that issues related to Kashmir are "entirely an internal matter".
At the meeting, Indian Ambassador to the UN Syed Akbaruddin said that the Union government is committed to annulling restrictions in the Valley and is undertaking steps in order to restore normalcy. The meeting was called after Pakistan, backed by China, had asked for "close consultations" on the Kashmir issue.
It also came after the Centre on August 5 annulled Article 370, which granted special status to J&K and split it into two Union Territories-Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
