Last phase thrown open without inauguration for public convenience
Security concern prevent celebration on JCRB Flyover

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 19: The last phase of prestigious Jehangir Chowk-Ram Bagh Flyover has been thrown open without the much expected inauguration by the Governor SP Malik. Sources said the flyover was scheduled to be inaugurated on the Independence Day with the ceremonial celebration being held there.
It was, however, reliably learnt that following intelligence input with security agencies didn't give permission for formal inauguration in the wake of prevalent circumstances in Kashmir. It was decided to throw open the facility in the interest of general people without waiting for the formal inauguration. Sources said the administration in Kashmir didn't want the people to suffer any further and thus didn't wait for the situation to be conducive for its inauguration. It is pertinent to mention that the JCRB Flyover was completed in four phases. The first phase was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti whereas next two phases were inaugurated by Governor SP Malik. The fourth phase was also expected to be inaugurated by him again.
Interestingly, when Mehbooba had inaugurated the first phase in 2017, the situation was uneasy and the security agencies had not given her the clearance for ceremonial crossing over of the new facility. After cutting the ribbon on the Gogji Bagh side she had taken a u-turn. The Flyover has reduced the travel time between Jehangir Chowk and Ram Bagh from 45 minutes to 2.5 minutes. The project was started in 2013 by the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Despite repeated attempts, the concerned couldn't be contacted for comment. But an official handout confirmed that the Flyover had been thrown open for public convenience.
