Early Times Report

JAMMU, Aug 19: Though a needle of suspense has been hanging over the future of Jammu and Kashmir administrative services better known as KAS but the officials have been hopeful of its continuation.
Sources in the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) informed Early Times that after the revocation of special status under Article 370, many apprehensions were raised such as complete abolition of administrative services and same would be conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
"The future of administrative services would only be finalized, after something will be come in black and white but as per the initial references in the JK Reorganization Bill 2019, it is clearly mentioned that UPSC will conduct exams for administrative services for Ladakh Union territory, while for Jammu and Kashmir, JKPSC will remain intact", an official pleading anonymity said, adding, "What transpired from the Bill is that the posts of Kashmir administrative services will continue to be filled by JKPSC and not by UPSC."
The official further said that in the other Union territories, all the gazetted services posts were filled by Union Public Service Commission and not their own Public Service Commission. "There are less possibilities that the other gazetted posts will be filled by JKPSC while the administrative services (KAS) will be filled by UPSC", the official said, adding that they were hopeful about the continuation of the services.
"A large number of students from various universities of the state have been preparing for years together to crack the KAS exams and get a change to be officers but the bifurcation and conversion into UT had created lot of uneasiness among the aspiring candidates as it will be very tough for them to compete at All India level", an aspiring candidate said, adding that some provisions must be made by the government so that the local candidates of the state would get preference in the state government jobs.
