Early Times Report

Udhampur, Aug 20: While talking to media to aware the general populace about importance of the 'World Senior Citizens Day' observed on 21st of August every year and about "The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007", retired SSP and social activist Mahadeep Singh Jamwal said that 21st August is observed to examine issues that affect the life of elderly people and to recognize and appreciate their contributions in their communities, families and societies, their achievements and involvement in the society to get promoted from their ability and knowledge.
It is generally observed that in the flashy world often the children avoid their parents and such parents feel insecure and the old age homes become their shelters.
Desertion and avoidance of elders by their next generation has been well taken care of by "The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007" that reinforce the natural and fundamental duty of a child to maintain his or her parents. Jamwal further said that the Supreme Court has interpreted this section so as to make daughters and sons married and unmarried equally responsible to maintain their parents.
As people grow old, they begin to rely on others for help throughout the senescence.
