Early Times Report
srinagar, Aug 21: In a significant development, one of oldest shop in commercial hub of Srinagar has resumed business activities, belying claims of those who were saying that people of Kashmir were not with Prime Minister Narinder Modi's decision of scrapping the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
At Residency Road, at stone's throw from historic Lal Chowk here, a provision store that has been famous for around five decades, has resumed its activities to do brisk business.
The shop was seen bustling with buyers who had come to store to buy their choice of grocery items when most of the departmental stores and other similar shops are closed since Aug 5 when New Delhi scrapped the article 370. But, on fifteenth day of uneasy calm, this particular store in the commercial hub dared to go against the decision of those anti nationals who want Kashmir to remain shut as a mark of protest against the Modi Government historic decision. Witnesses and locals said the shop started business activities from August 20 and that the buyers were happy to see the development. "For a fortnight I have been waiting to buy my choice of noodles and sauce. Finally this shop helped me to get the same. We are thankful to this shopkeeper," said a customer while making purchase.
Sources said the administration had been trying to encourage the shopkeepers in the area to resume business but traders' community had apprehensions. "But now I think the opening of this shop in the commercial hub and customer's response will encourage others as well to resume their business. After all till how long Kashmir will suffer," said a shopkeeper on the condition of anonymity. It is pertinent to mention that Kashmir is shut since the abrogation of the special status but shopkeepers in the like Sanat Nagar, Raj Bagh and Jawahar Nagar have resumed the business.
Analysts said the opening of the popular provision shop at Residency Road in Srinagar would improve the business activity further. "We expect administration to safeguard interest of those who are willing to resume their business," said a businessman on the condition of anonymity. Sources said that administration was willing to offer all possible support to the traders who are willing to resume business.
